Long Beach Police Department Local News

On Thursday, November 5, 2015, at approximately 12:11 a.m., Long Beach Police responded to the southbound 710 Freeway (West Shoreline Drive) south of the 6th Street off ramp regarding an injury traffic collision, which resulted in the death of a male adult.

When officers arrived, they discovered an overturned 2009 Pontiac Vibe. Long Beach Fire Department paramedics responded and determined the driver deceased at the scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed the Pontiac was traveling southbound on the 710 Freeway and being driven by a 35-year-old resident of Long Beach. According to witnesses, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it began to spin sideways. The vehicle slid toward the west curb, down the west embankment, overturned, and collided with a tree. It appears the driver was not seat belted at the time of the collision and was partially ejected through the sunroof. No other vehicles or parties were involved in this incident.

The identity of the driver is Shawn Petite, 35, by the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
