LBPD K-9 Fatally Shot, Suspect Killed in Long Beach Officer-Involved Shooting

On Tuesday, June 28, 2016, around 9 a.m., members of the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force requested Long Beach Police assistance when a suspect fled to the 2800 block of East 15thStreet, where a subsequent officer involved shooting occurred.

The preliminary investigation revealed the following:

  • A U.S. Marshals Task Force, in which Long Beach Police participates, spotted a male adult suspect, wanted in connection with a December 2014 shooting involving multiple victims in Long Beach
  • Task Force members contacted the suspect in the area of 16th Street and Temple Avenue. The suspect fled on foot and a foot pursuit ensued.
  • The suspect ran into an apartment of an acquaintance, located in the 2800 block of East 15th Street
  • Long Beach Police responded to assist and established a containment
  • The suspect was considered armed and dangerous and the Long Beach Special Weapons and Tactics Team (S.W.A.T.) was activated
  • As a precautionary measure nearby residences were evacuated while the investigation continued
  • S.W.A.T. deployed and directed the suspect to exit the residence
  • The suspect exited the residence and failed to comply with the officers’ verbal commands
  • As the suspect began to aggressively charge the officers, intermediate force options were deployed, including a 40mm rubber baton round and a Police Service dog attached to S.W.A.T.
  • The suspect continued his aggressive charge toward officers while canine Credo continued to try and stop the suspect from advancing towards officers
  • As Credo fought with the suspect, the suspect produced a knife while continuing to advance towards officers. One of the officers discharged his weapon to protect himself and the other officers from the suspect. Both the suspect and Credo were struck by gunfire.
  • Long Beach Fire Department transported the suspect to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased
  • Credo was transported by his handler to a local veterinarian hospital where he succumbed to his injuries
  • The knife was recovered at the scene

The Los Angeles County Coroner is conducting an independent investigation. The identity of the suspect will be released after next of kin has been notified.

The Police Department thoroughly reviews all use of force incidents through a rigorous multi-stepprocess that evaluates legal, policy, tactical, and equipment issues. Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation of the shooting, as they do with all officer involved shootings that occur in Los Angeles County that result in injury or death.
