Long Beach and LA Mayors Urge Dockworkers to Resolve Labor Dispute
Responding to fears of an impending shutdown at the West Coast seaports, the mayors of Long Beach and Los Angeles urged dockworkers and their employers today to resolve labor disputes that have been escalating since last July. Productivity at the ports has fallen up to 50% and both ports “are important engines for our local and national economy, so it is critical that both the ILWU and PMA continue talking to quickly reach an agreement and return our ports to efficient operations,” they said in a jointly issued statement. With a new proposal on the table both mayors hope both sides, which are in federal mediation, will reach an agreement soon.
