Long Beach Open Coastal Beaches Closed Due to Sewage Spill

A sewage spill Tuesday morning in San Gabriel has resulted in a beach closure for all open coastal swimming areas in Long Beach.  The spill was reported by the Los Angeles County Sanitation District. The volume of the spill was estimated at approximately 250,000 gallons and is still on-going.  The spill entered the storm system approximately 33 miles upstream from Long Beach.

Long Beach Health Officer, Dr. Mitchell Kushner, is ordering all swimming areas in Long Beach’s open coastal beaches closed for water contact, until lab results confirm that the water is safe for swimming.

Separately, Dr. Kushner, has issued a rain advisory for all recreational beaches and bays in the City of Long Beach following the rain experienced in the last 24 hours. After any significant rainfall, unhealthy conditions may result from increased runoff from storm drain outlets and rivers, which eventually reach the City’s beaches. Recreational swimming areas should be avoided for three days following the end of a rainstorm.
