The Long Beach Search & Rescue Unit has been in existence since 1962 and provides young adults with an opportunity to serve the public during emergency situations. Applications will be accepted at the annual orientation meeting on Tuesday, October 6, 2015, at 7:00 pm., at 2247 Argonne Avenue, Long Beach, 90815. This orientation meeting is only held once a year. Motivated young adults, who are interested in public safety careers, and their parents are encouraged to attend this one-hour meeting.

Requirements to apply:

  • Be at least 15 and not yet 19 years of age by the start of the academy,
  • Have no felony convictions, demonstrate high moral and citizenship standards,
  • Maintain at least a “C” grade average in school,
  • Be physically fit and be willing to devote a substantial amount of time to training, public events, and emergency call-outs.

Training includes:

  • Fire suppression
  • Search patterns
  • Vehicle extrication
  • Firearm safety
  • High-angle rescue
  • Ladder operations
  • Helicopter operations

Emergency & Support Activities:

  • Missing person searches
  • Major fire incidents
  • SWAT team incidents
  • Natural disasters
  • Aircraft accidents
