Long Beach Animal Care Services Offering Spay/Neuter in May

Throughout the remainder of May, Long Beach Animal Care Services (ACS)
will be distributing spay/neuter vouchers in person at the PD Pitchford Companion
Animal Village.

Spaying or neutering your pets is extremely important, for both animals
and people, said Mayor Robert Garcia. The benefits include reducing
companion animal overpopulation, increasing the chance that cats and
dogs will have a longer healthier life, and lowering the risk that they
will develop any number of expensive and deadly diseases.

Vouchers will only be distributed to residents of Long Beach and the ACS
contract cities of Los Alamitos, Cerritos, Seal Beach and Signal Hill. Proof of
residency is required through photo ID or utility bill.

We usually offer a limited number of vouchers beginning on the first
Thursday of the month; however, with the new requirement that all dogs
over 6 months be altered, we wanted to help our pet owners and increase
this program through May,? said Ted Stevens, Manager of Animal Care Services.

During this May promotion, vouchers will have an increased value of $75 for
dogs and $50 for cats rather than the customary $30 amount. Instead of
only 50 cat and 50 dog vouchers, there will be 200 vouchers each for cats and
dogs. Only one voucher will be distributed per household. Additional vouchers
may be distributed upon request and with supervisor approval.

Spay/Neuter vouchers are only good at participating local veterinary hospitals and
clinics. Owners must pay any remaining balance of the procedure directly to the
veterinary hospital. Please call ahead for pricing and appointment information.
A full listing of participating veterinarians can be found at www.longbeach.gov/acs
under Spay & Neuter Programs.

In Long Beach dogs over 6 months and cats over 4 months are required by
law to be spayed/neutered unless meeting certain exemptions as listed at www.longbeach.gov/acs.

Animal Care Services is located at the P.D. Pitchford Companion Animal
Village at 7700 East Spring Street in Long Beach. The Village is open Wednesday
through Friday from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm; Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm;
