New 605-Foot-Long Seaside Way Pedestrian Bridge Construction Begins

The City of Long Beach today celebrated the recent start of construction for the new 605-foot-long Seaside Way Pedestrian Bridge along East Seaside Way, which will provide seamless connectivity from the Long Beach Convention Center Walkway near Pine Avenue to the Performing Arts Center.

“The bridge will serve as a landmark within the Convention Center Complex and greater Downtown area,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “It will also help our economy by simulating tourism in Long Beach and by making it easier for conventioneers to access the Performing Arts Center.”

The bridge draws its inspiration from our City’s history as a major seaside town. It is designed as an abstract breaking wave with a deck, and will feature a canopy of LED accent lights. It will also include paving, seating, and landscaping evocative of a boardwalk environment.

“With viewing points and cell phone charging stations, this will be more than just a bridge,” said Vice Mayor Suja Lowenthal. “It will be a community gathering place offering retreat and respite from the daily rhythms of life.”

Construction activity began late last month, and is anticipated to take approximately one year to complete. The project also consists of replacing damaged curbs and gutters, driveways, alley entrances and sidewalks.
