Long Beach Election Season Has Begun

Long Beach, CA

With citywide elections a year away, 5 incumbents have filed candidate intention paperwork to run for reelection.  These incumbents include: current Mayor Robert Garcia, current 1st District Councilmember Lena Gonzalez, current 3rd District Councilmember Suzie Price, current 5th District Councilmember Stacy Mungo, current 7th District Counclmember Roberto Uranga, and current 9th District Councilmember and Vice Mayor Rex Richardson.

Four out of five of these incumbents are registered Democrats with the exception of Stacy Mungo who is a registered Republican.

An outsider candidate has also filed candidate intention paperwork.  Her name is Carmen Huxley who is running for the 3rd District Council seat.  Separately, current City Prosecutor Doug Haubert has filed his paperwork to begin running for re-election.

Statistically, the odds of beating an incumbent sit at about 15%. In addition, many of the incumbents running for re-election here in Long Beach have strong ties to organized labor, a political force in the city.

Organized Labor has had a string of success in the past two elections beating out business candidates locally with wins in District 2 and District 8 in the 2016 election, and in District 1, District 7, District 9, and the Mayoral race in 2014.

In the topsy turvy world of politics, much like the country’s Presidential Election however, anything can happen.

Developing story…
