Beach Streets Returns to Uptown on October 28

After its debut on June 6, 2015, Long Beach’s Open Street event is returning to Uptown. The public is invited to participate this Saturday, October 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. At Beach Streets Uptown, participants can walk, bike, or roll along a car-free route while sporting their favorite, family-appropriate Halloween costume (no masks or weapons are allowed).

The event kick-off will be held at 4570 Atlantic Ave., Long Beach, CA 90807, at 10:00 a.m.

“Beach Streets University welcomed almost 70,000 attendees, and we are excited to see how many more community members will come out to enjoy Beach Streets Uptown,” said Mayor Robert Garcia. “These events have been so successful because residents and visitors value the sense of community and local discovery that it fosters through this car-free, open streets experience.”

The four-mile event route includes:
Wardlow Road, from Orange Avenue to Atlantic Avenue.
Atlantic Avenue, from Wardlow Road to Harding Street.
Harding Street, from Atlantic Avenue to Myrtle Avenue.

“We are thrilled that Beach Streets is coming back to its roots. Uptown is where it all began,” said Vice Mayor Rex Richardson. “Join us for outdoor activities, music, food, and family fun at Village Fest at Houghton Park as well as other hubs along the route that are sure to capture the Uptown spirit.”

Houghton Park will be home to attractions such as Bicycle Motocross (BMX) demonstrations, free kids skate lessons, and the third annual Village Fest where legendary reggae artist, Barrington Levy will be headlining along with other artists and bands such as Pharcyde, LAW, Fes Uno, Tiago Vega, Big Zay Mack, and D.N.A. More information can be found here.

“There are lots of activities to participate in and a chock-full of local businesses to visit at this Saturday’s Beach Streets event,” said Councilmember Roberto Uranga. “Not to mention, the weather will be perfect for families to enjoy all that the northern part of the Seventh District has to offer.”

At the South Hub, located at Orange Avenue and Wardlow Road, there will be live performances by Long Beach local bands such as Tall Walls, The Vooduo and Spaghetti Cumbia. Attendees will also get an exclusive sneak peek of the Long Beach Ballet’s Nutcracker through a live, youth rehearsal performance.

Street Performances by Adorkable Derek will take place throughout the day at the Family Hub on Atlantic Avenue and East 45th Way. Families can also enjoy bike decorating, a rock wall, face painting and the Walk n’ Roll Kids Costume Parade at 1:00 p.m. on Atlantic Avenue.

“We are thrilled that Beach Streets Uptown will be happening right here in our backyard on Atlantic Avenue,” said Councilmember Al Austin. “This Open Streets event brings our vibrant city together in a unique way. Bring your bikes, skateboards and scooters and experience the best of Uptown with us.”

Tens of thousands of people have participated in the City’s first four Open Street events: Beach Streets Uptown held on June 6, 2015; Beach Streets Downtown held on March 19, 2016; Beach Streets Midtown held on November 12, 2016, and Beach Streets University held on April 29, 2017.

There will be seven intersections for vehicle-crossing through California Avenue, Bixby Road, Carson Street, San Antonio Drive, Del Amo Boulevard, Market Street, and South Street. Acceptable modes of transportation for the event are: bicycles, skates, rollerblades, skateboards, and walking. The only motorized vehicles allowed are ones officially marked as a means of transportation for those with disabilities.
