57-Year-Old Man in Wheelchair Fatally Struck By Vehicle in Long Beach

On Sunday, June 10, 2018, at approximately 11:50 p.m., officers from the Long Beach Police Department were dispatched to 7th Street and Channel Drive regarding an injury traffic collision. When officers arrived on scene they discovered that a pedestrian in a wheelchair was struck by passing vehicle.

On scene, officers found the pedestrian lying in the eastbound 7th Street left turn lane west of Channel Drive. Long Beach Fire Personnel arrived on scene and determined the pedestrian deceased. The driver of the vehicle, and two additional occupants were uninjured as a result of the collision.

The preliminary investigation, including video of the collision, revealed that a 57-year-old male resident of Long Beach was crossing against the “Don’t Walk” sign in the northbound Channel Drive crosswalk across 7th Street. A 63-year-old male resident of Long Beach was driving a 1996 Ford Ranger pick-up truck west on 7th Street approaching the green light at the intersection with Channel Drive. As the vehicle crossed through the intersection, the vehicle struck the wheelchair and pedestrian.

After the collision, the driver stopped to render aid. The driver had a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance. Neither drugs or alcohol were a factor in this collision with the driver.
