Long Beach Police Officer Unintentionally Shoots Driver During Traffic Stop
On Saturday, February 9, 2019 at approximately 11:34 p.m., officers working the One Love Cali Reggae Festival were involved in a traffic stop on the 900 block of Harbor Plaza. During the traffic stop, a loaded firearm and open alcoholic containers were located and recovered from the vehicle. The officers then requested assistance with the traffic stop.
Once additional officers arrived on scene, an officer unintentionally discharged their firearm. The driver of the vehicle, a male adult from Compton, was struck in the right arm. The subject was transported to a hospital with a non-life threatening injury. The vehicle was occupied by four additional subjects, a female adult from Compton, a male adult from Compton, a male adult from Carson, and a male juvenile from Paramount. The driver was treated and released from the hospital.
The shooting will be investigated by the Long Beach Police Department Homicide Detail.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent investigation of the incident, as they do with all officer involved shootings that result in injury or death.
