Cheese it up with Pizza Day

Slice, slice baby! Did you know that the average American eats 23 pounds of pizza per year? With so many different kinds of pizza out there, it’s easy to see why. Pizza Day is Feb. 9 and to celebrate, we have five fun facts about pizza and five local restaurants where you can enjoy a slice (or more)!

  • Americans order 350 slices of pizza every second.
  • Countries all over the world serve pizza but they all like different toppings. Costa Rica has coconut pizza, Sweden likes banana curry, Japan puts eels on their pies and Brazil uses green peas. 
  • Eating pizza once a week can reduce the risk of esophageal cancer.
  • Thousands of people attended the Pizza Expo, the world’s largest pizza-only trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada.
  • Kids aged 3-11 prefer pizza over all foods for lunch and dinner.

Deli News Pizza has been a Long Beach staple for over 20 years. Lunch specials are served between 11 a.m. – 3 p.m and there is a special for students – $6 for an unlimited topping 12-inch pizza – 8 slices! The 4th Horseman is located at 121 West 4th St and has a dark take on amazing pies. Called ‘apocalyptic pizza’  Popular types include the ‘ Rosemary’s Baby’ which is house tomato sauce, mozzarelle, house-made Italian sausage, and balsamic mushrooms and ‘Death is piggy’ – house tomato sauce, shredded mozzarella, pepperoni, house-made Italian sausage, house-made meatball crumble and bacon.

Rance’s Chicago Pizza has three styles of pizza; pan with caramelized crust, stuffed like a pie and thin style square cut. Not only that, they have a variety of specialty pies and a make-your-own option. For National Pizza Day, they are doing 50% off personal pizzas from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Located at 5258 E. 2nd Street, Rance’s is a treat for your taste buds.

Z Pizza is another stop in Belmont Shore – located at 4612 E. 2nd street near Buffalo Exchange. Z Pizza has all the classics and then some new twists like Berkeley Vegan (housemade marinara sauce, vegan cheese, vegan sausage, roasted zucchini, baby heirloom tomatoes, roasted mushrooms, roasted red onions and bell peppers) and an Argula Pesto Pizza Salad is cauliflower crust with basil pesto and mozzarella, topped with a salad of baby arugula, fresh mozzarella, heirloom tomatoes, house-made lemon vinaigrette, fresh avocado, and balsamic glaze drizzle.

Buono’s Pizza is having a fishbowl drawing at the counter for customers for gift certificates ranging from $7 to $50. Bueno’s serves a few classic pies; cheese, meat, veggies, and Buono’s Specials, but they also have gourmet toppings so customers can customize their pizza. They are located at 250 W. Ocean Blvd and 401 W. Willow Street.
