The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday, November 19, 2024, in the 5200 block of Atlantic Avenue.

Officers were dispatched to the area around 3:15 p.m. following reports of a man armed with a gun. Upon arriving at the scene, police located a male suspect matching the description provided in the initial 911 call.

Authorities attempted to de-escalate the situation, enlisting the assistance of a hostage negotiator and a Mental Evaluation Team. Despite these efforts and the arrival of SWAT personnel, the suspect remained uncooperative during the two-and-a-half-hour standoff.

According to LBPD, the situation escalated when the suspect produced a firearm. In response, the suspect and four officers exchanged gunfire.

During the incident, one officer sustained a gunshot wound to the arm. He was transported to a local hospital, treated, and later released. The suspect, who was struck by gunfire, received immediate medical attention from officers on the scene before Long Beach Fire Department personnel took over. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators recovered a firearm at the location. The suspect’s identity has not been released, pending notification of next of kin by the Los Angeles County Department of the Medical Examiner.

Four people were hospitalized after a boat caught

Four people were hospitalized after a boat caught fire near the Queen Mary in Long Beach on Friday evening.

The Long Beach Fire Department reported that firefighters responded around 7:10 p.m. to a 30-foot boat fully engulfed in flames along the 700 block of Queensway Drive, between Hotel Maya and the Queen Mary.

Video footage captured thick black smoke rising from the boat, which was located about 100 feet from the shore.

Seven people were initially found floating nearby in a dinghy. Four of them were transported to a hospital, though their conditions remain unknown.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze by 8:15 p.m., after which the boat was towed to Long Beach Fire Station 21 for further investigation.

An illegal fireworks show startled Long Beach residents late Sunday night as dozens of rockets launched from the Queensway Bridge lit up the city’s Downtown waterfront. Reports of loud blasts and colorful flashes quickly circulated as people across Long Beach witnessed the display, which left trails of smoke wafting over the bay.

A now-deleted Reddit video captured one of the closest views of the incident, showing at least eight cars parked in the right lane of the Queensway Bridge while fireworks exploded overhead, illuminating the night sky.

Long Beach Police reported receiving initial calls around 11:15 p.m. from concerned residents who feared the sounds might be gunfire. Responding officers first arrived near Fourth Street and Daisy Avenue but quickly realized the fireworks were being launched from the Queensway Bridge, about a mile away. Officers made their way to the bridge but arrived at 11:25 p.m., only to find the scene deserted.

By Monday morning, approximately ten boxes of empty fireworks tubes were discovered on the bridge, leaving officials searching for the individuals responsible for the unauthorized display. The incident remains under investigation, and the Long Beach Police Department is asking anyone with information to come forward.

Long Beach, CA — Early this morning, at approximately 2:44 a.m., Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) officers responded to a call from Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) school safety personnel regarding a possible burglary suspect on the Millikan High School campus. During the incident, a school safety officer discharged their service weapon, though no injuries have been reported.

Upon arrival, LBPD activated their SWAT team, which conducted a thorough search of the campus. Despite the extensive effort, the suspect was not located and remains at large.

As a precautionary measure, LBPD and LBUSD announced an increased law enforcement presence on and around the school campus throughout the day to ensure the safety of students and staff.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with authorities working to identify and apprehend the suspect.

Residents and businesses in these areas were advised to use only boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking and cooking as a safety precaution to avoid stomach or intestinal illness.
Long Beach residents were given the following information regarding the notice:
* Do boil all water for one (1) minute (rolling boil)
* Let water cool before drinking
* Use boiled or bottled water for drinking, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice
* Boiling water kills bacteria and other organisms in the water
In an emergency, water can also be purified by using household unscented liquid bleach following these steps:

* For clear water, use 8 drops (1/8 tsp.) of bleach for 1 gallon of water. For cloudy water, filter through a clean cloth and use 16 drops (1/4 tsp.) of bleach for 1 gallon of water.
* Mix well. Allow to stand for 30 minutes before using.
* Water may taste or smell like chlorine. This means disinfection has occurred.
Water in the affected areas is being monitored by Long Beach Utilities in coordination with the Division of Drinking Water (DDW).
Residents will be informed when testing confirms the water is safe to drink.

Boil Water Notice Issued for Thousands of Long Beach Residents

The Long Beach Utilities Department, in coordination with the State Water Resources Control Board’s Division of Drinking Water (DDW), has issued a Boil Water Notice for customers in several areas of Long Beach following a significant water main break. The affected neighborhoods include portions of the 90805, 90807, and part of the 90806 zip codes.

The precautionary notice was issued after a water main break at 3502 Orange Avenue earlier today caused low water pressure in the area. Long Beach Utilities emphasized that the notice is being issued out of an abundance of caution.

Areas affected by the Boil Water Notice:
90805 zip code (east of the 710 Freeway)

• 90806 zip code (between Orange Avenue and Cherry Avenue, north of Spring Street, if serviced by Long Beach Utilities)

• 90807 zip code

Residents and businesses in these areas are advised to use boiled or bottled water for all drinking and cooking purposes until further notice. This measure is necessary to prevent potential stomach or intestinal illness from contaminants that may have entered the water supply due to the low pressure.

Boil Water Instructions:

• Boil all tap water for at least one minute (until it reaches a rolling boil).

• Let the water cool before using it for drinking, brushing teeth, or food preparation.

• Boiling water kills bacteria and other organisms that may be present.

For those unable to boil water, household bleach can be used as a temporary disinfectant:

• For clear water: Add 8 drops (1/8 teaspoon) of bleach per gallon of water.

• For cloudy water: First filter through a clean cloth, then add 16 drops (1/4 teaspoon) of bleach per gallon.

• Allow the treated water to stand for 30 minutes before use.

One Injured After Explosion Destroys House in Long Beach

A house in Long Beach was completely destroyed in an explosion Monday morning, leaving one person injured and causing damage to a nearby structure.

The explosion occurred shortly after 11 a.m. at a residence on the 2800 block of Gale Avenue. Authorities believe the blast was “likely related to a gas leak from an appliance.” The explosion demolished an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) back house on the property, while a front structure sustained minor damage.

A man in his 30s was rescued from the debris and transported to a trauma burn center. His current condition is unknown. The injured man’s family is believed to live next door to the site of the explosion.

Firefighters quickly extinguished a small fire sparked by the blast, and inspectors are continuing to investigate the cause. The back house, classified as an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU), was deemed a total loss, according to the fire department.

The area around Gale Avenue and West 28th Street remains closed as the investigation continues.

Double Homicide Suspect Found Dead After Long Beach Standoff with SWAT

A double homicide suspect was found dead after barricading himself inside a Long Beach home on Monday, following a fatal shooting that claimed the lives of two people.

SWAT officers and police surrounded the residence for over five hours, trying to establish contact with the suspect, who had fled the scene of the shooting.

Long Beach Police responded to the 300 block of East 63rd Street after receiving a report of gunfire around 11:15 a.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered a woman with gunshot wounds to her upper torso and a man with undisclosed injuries. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman was transported to a hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The standoff began after officers tracked the suspect, an adult male, to a nearby home where he barricaded himself.

Authorities later confirmed that the suspect was found dead inside the home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation remains ongoing.
