Man Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver
On Monday, March 16, 2020 at approximately 9:54 p.m., officers from the Long Beach Police Department were dispatched to the area of E. 7th Street and Ultimo Avenue regarding an injury traffic collision between two vehicles and a pedestrian. Upon arrival, officers located a single vehicle stopped on E. 7th Street east of Ultimo Avenue and a pedestrian lying in the roadway.
Long Beach Fire personnel arrived on scene and administered medical aid to the pedestrian who succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was not injured.
The preliminary investigation revealed that an unknown vehicle was traveling westbound 7th Street in the number one-lane when it struck a 37-year-old, male resident of Long Beach. The pedestrian was attempting to walk northbound across E. 7th Street, west of the intersection with Ultimo Avenue outside of a crosswalk. After being struck by the vehicle that fled the scene, the pedestrian’s body came to rest lying motionless in the eastbound lanes of 7th Street.
A 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 61-year-old female resident of Long Beach was traveling eastbound 7th Street and struck the pedestrian who was lying in the roadway wearing all dark clothing. She immediately stopped her vehicle and realized she struck a pedestrian. She stopped her vehicle and began to render aid, with other Good Samaritans who stopped to assist, until Long Beach Fire personnel arrived.
She remained on scene and assisted with the investigation. Neither alcohol, drugs or distracted driving where a factor for the driver that remained on scene. She was positively identified with her valid driver’s license, had proof of insurance, and was released.
There is no description of the vehicle that fled the scene after first striking the pedestrian.
