Traffic Fatality on Atlantic Avenue and Vernon Street
LONG BEACH, CA – On May 13, 2022, at approximately 9:12 p.m., officers responded to the area of Atlantic Avenue and Vernon Street regarding an injury traffic collision between a vehicle and a parked big rig truck, which resulted in the death of a male adult.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Long Beach Fire Department personnel were already on the scene, rendering aid to the driver of the vehicle, and ultimately determined the driver had succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The preliminary investigation revealed a 2017 Honda Civic was traveling southbound on Atlantic Avenue, south of Vernon Street, when the driver made an unsafe lane change and collided into the back of a parked, unoccupied, big rig truck. The driver was the only occupant in the Honda. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and assisted in identifying the driver as 24-year-old Martin Ojeda of Long Beach, who had a valid driver’s license.
At this time, It is believed speed and impaired driving were factors in this collision; however, the investigation remains ongoing.
