Police Identify 31-Year-Old Who Killed 78-Year-Old in Stabbing
On Saturday, at approximately 6:18 a.m., Long Beach police officers were dispatched to the 2900 block of Coolidge Street regarding a stabbing, which resulted in the death of a female adult.
When LBPD officers arrived they located the victim in the alleyway suffering from what appeared to be stab wounds to the upper torso. The Long Beach Fire Department arrived on scene and determined the victim deceased.
A resident immediately alerted officers that he observed a subject running from the area where the victim was attacked. Moments later, officers located the subject matching the description running towards the 91 Freeway near Paramount Boulevard. Officers attempted to detain the suspect, but he refused to comply with their commands. A use of force occurred to take the suspect into custody and a knife was recovered at the arrest location.
Homicide Detectives arrived on scene and conducted their investigation. Detectives believe the victim was in the alleyway collecting recyclables when she was attacked from behind by the suspect. The suspect stabbed the victim and fled the area on foot after residents began yelling for help.
Detectives do not have a motive for the stabbing and are investigating the relationship between the victim and suspect, however both individuals live in the same condo complex.
The suspect has been identified as Kevin Ngo, a 31-year-old resident of Long Beach. Ngo was booked into the Long Beach City Jail for one count of murder and is currently being held on $2,000,000 bail.
The victim has been identified as Paz Veliz, a 78-year-old resident of Long Beach.
