Two Long Beach Officer-Involved Shootings in One Night

Two separate incidents of officer-involved shootings occurred in Long Beach neighborhoods on the evening of April 26, 2024.
The first incident unfolded as a home invasion robbery occurring around 8:35 pm when Long Beach police officers responded to a distressing call reporting a person armed with a gun within a residence situated on the 6800 block of Cerritos Avenue.
Upon arrival, LBPD officers discovered an armed home invasion robbery was in progress, with the armed suspect lingering in the yard of the house. Officers cordoned off the area and initiated communication with the suspect, a male adult visibly armed with a firearm.
A tense standoff ensued, lasting over an hour, as officers employed verbal de-escalation tactics to diffuse the situation. Despite efforts to peacefully resolve the crisis, the deployment of SWAT resources as a last resort. However, before further action could be taken, an officer-involved shooting occurred, resulting in the suspect being struck in the upper body. Immediate medical attention was administered by officers on the scene, and the suspect was swiftly transported by LBFD paramedics to a local hospital. Tragically, the suspect succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. A replica firearm was recovered from the scene, shedding light on the intensity of the confrontation.
Hours later, at 11:44 pm, another officer found himself thrust into a life-threatening situation while on patrol near 58th Street and Orange Avenue. The officer witnessed a male adult suspect engaged in gunfire with another adult male victim. In pursuit of the suspect, a foot chase ensued, resulting in a second officer-involved shooting.
Quick to act, officers provided immediate medical aid until LBFD paramedics arrived, and the wounded suspect was rushed to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition with injuries to his lower body. Remarkably, no other injuries were reported. The shooting victim fled the scene, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation.
Authorities emphasized that there is no connection between the two officer-involved shootings, suggesting they were isolated incidents. Nevertheless, investigations into both events are underway, as the community grapples with the repercussions of the tumultuous night.
