A 20-year-old Long Beach man died after he was shot while driving and crashed into a utility pole, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

The shooting was reported at about 7:28 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, in the area of 12th Street and Lewis Avenue. Officers found the victim, later identified as Cori Michael Scales, suffering from a gunshot wound.
Police said a preliminary investigation indicates Scales was driving when he was shot. His vehicle then crashed into an Edison pole. Officers performed lifesaving measures until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived. Scales was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
He died from his injuries on Aug. 16.
The suspect or suspects fled before officers arrived. Police have not released a suspect description.
Homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances and motive for the shooting and believe additional witnesses may have seen events before or after the gunfire. Anyone with information is urged to contact Long Beach police.
