Long Beach police responded to the 1900 block of Lemon Avenue at about 9:13 p.m. on Sept. 26 after reports of a shooting. Officers found a teenage boy and teenage girl suffering from gunshot wounds. Long Beach Fire Department personnel transported both victims to local hospitals. Police said the girl suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The boy was listed in critical but stable condition. With six traffic deaths in September, it remains unclear whether Long Beach’s new speed cameras will help deter traffic fatalities or whether the city needs more motor patrol officers pulling drivers over and issuing tickets.
Long Beach Launches Vibe City Speed Cameras as Tra Long Beach Launches Vibe City Speed Cameras as Traffic Deaths Rise Long Beach has launched its new automated speed camera program in an effort to slow drivers down and reduce serious and fatal crashes. The five-year pilot program includes 18 speed safety devices at locations with a history of severe crashes, speeding, street racing and in some school zones. The cameras are expected to begin a 60-day warning period in October. Drivers traveling 11 mph or more over the posted speed limit will receive a warning during that period, but no fine. Citations are expected to begin in December. The cameras will photograph only the rear license plate of a vehicle. They will not photograph drivers’ faces, use facial recognition or operate as police surveillance cameras. The city says the information will be kept by Public Works and not shared with law enforcement agencies. The program comes after Long Beach recorded 53 fatal traffic collisions last year, its deadliest year on the roadways in more than a decade. But will the cameras actually slow people down? Long Beach previously used automated photo cameras at some intersections, but those cameras were eventually removed. That raises questions about whether the new speed cameras will have a lasting effect or temporary like the amphitheater. Should Long Beach have more LBPD officers conducting traffic enforcement and pulling speeding drivers over, or should the city rely more on what some residents call “RoboCop” cameras that automatically issue tickets? The city says half of the citation revenue will help pay for the program. The other half will fund traffic-calming projects such as speed humps, crosswalks and other safety improvements. The five-year pilot will ultimately provide Long Beach with data on whether automated enforcement can reduce speeding and deadly crashes.

Long Beach Council Approves Public Comment Changes Long Beach Council Approves Public Comment Changes Despite Resident Opposition The Long Beach City Council voted Tuesday to change how residents speak during council meetings, despite strong opposition from the public. Residents told the council they believe the changes make it harder for the public to be heard. Some questioned whether the council really wants to listen to residents when public comment is being moved into one short section at the start of meetings. Under the new rules, all public comments will happen at the beginning of the meeting. Total public comment will be limited to 90 minutes unless the council adds more time. • 10 or fewer speakers: 3 minutes each • 11 to 20 speakers: 90 seconds each • More than 21 speakers: 30 seconds each Previously, residents could speak during general public comment, on individual agenda items and again at the end of meetings. The City says the change will save about $150,632 in overtime costs and could help restore services such as Quality of Life officers and library hours. The proposal failed 5-3 when it was first brought forward in June. Residents argued the changes were not required by state law. The council also approved a roughly $4 billion budget by a 7-2 vote as Long Beach faces a $58.2 million shortfall. About 180 jobs will be eliminated, and Fire Engine 14 near Colorado Lagoon will be cut, potentially increasing emergency response times. Parking tickets for 18 violations will rise to $100, while street-sweeping tickets will increase to $80. The cannabis retail tax will also rise from 7% to 8%. Councilmembers Cindy Allen and Kristina Duggan opposed the budget. The decisions leave residents facing higher fees, service cuts and less time to speak directly to their elected officials. On Tuesday, the City Council will take more votes to put the plan in place. This includes changing the local cannabis tax, moving money between departments, and giving final approval to the city budget.

He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. Homicide detectives are investigating, and police say the shooting may be gang related. At approximately 5:51 p.m., officers responded to the 1900 block of Lemon Avenue for another shooting. A 17-year-old girl was found with a gunshot wound to the lower body. She was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The motive and suspect information remain under investigation, with police saying the incident may also be gang related. On September 10, detectives began investigating a fatal traffic collision at Atlantic Avenue and Villa Park that claimed the life of a male adult motorcyclist. All three investigations remain ongoing.

Collision Investigation detectives are investigating the fatal traffic collision that occurred about 8:52 p.m. on Sept. 5, 2026, in the area of Long Beach Boulevard and East 23rd Street. Officers responded to reports of a hit-and-run involving a vehicle and an adult pedestrian. Upon arrival, they found the pedestrian lying on the Metro Light Rail Vehicle tracks along Long Beach Boulevard. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. According to the preliminary investigation, an unknown vehicle traveling southbound on Long Beach Boulevard struck the pedestrian in the roadway. The pedestrian was then struck by a Metro light rail vehicle. The vehicle involved in the initial collision left the scene. The identity of the deceased is pending confirmation by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office. Investigators have not determined whether speed, distracted driving or impaired driving played a role in the collision. The investigation remains ongoing.

Long Beach Triple Shooting Leads to Officer-Involv Long Beach Triple Shooting Leads to Officer-Involved Shooting on 710 Freeway Long Beach Police Department is investigating a shooting involving multiple victims that led to a vehicle pursuit and an officer-involved shooting with a suspect firing an AK-47 with drum magazine early Tuesday morning. At about 12:24 a.m. Sept. 1, officers responded to the 200 block of Aquarium Way regarding a reported shooting. Officers found three adult men suffering from injuries. Two victims were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while a third was treated at the scene. Officers quickly identified a possible suspect and vehicle. The vehicle was later located near Burnett Street and Pacific Avenue. When officers attempted to stop the suspect, he failed to pull over, leading to a pursuit. During the pursuit, while traveling northbound on the 710 Freeway, police said the suspect fired shots toward officers, prompting an officer-involved shooting. The pursuit ended when the suspect vehicle crashed into a pole in Los Angeles. The suspect was taken into custody following the use of a 40mm less-lethal weapon. Police said the suspect was not struck by officers’ gunfire. He was transported to a hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. No officers were injured. A firearm was recovered. The circumstances and motive behind the initial shooting remain under investigation.

At about 2:40 p.m., officers responded to the 6900 block of Atlantic Avenue for a multi-vehicle collision. Police said a 2019 Volvo driven by 38-year-old Adalberto Delgado-Perez of Compton was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed when it struck a 2004 Chevrolet turning onto Atlantic Place. The Volvo then hit two occupied vehicles waiting at the intersection. The Chevrolet overturned, and a female passenger was pronounced dead at the scene. The male driver was taken to a hospital. The occupants of the other vehicles, two women and two children, were not injured. Delgado-Perez initially fled but returned shortly afterward and was arrested. He was booked on suspicion of hit-and-run resulting in death or injury, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing bodily injury. Bail was set at $100,000. Police said speed and impaired driving appear to be contributing factors. Later that night, at about 10:35 p.m., officers responded to the 5700 block of Pacific Coast Highway for another injury collision. Police said a westbound vehicle struck another vehicle exiting a shopping center. A male adult was taken to a hospital, where he later died. Two adult women were also hospitalized.

At about 10:15 a.m., LBPD responded to the 700 block of East Shoreline Drive after reports of a stabbing. Officers found a man suffering from multiple stab wounds to his upper body. LBFD transported the victim to a hospital in stable condition. Police determined the stabbing happened during an argument with two homeless men, one was arrested nearby on suspicion of the attack. The stabbing occurred near the newly built Gaucho Beach the Alamitos Beach Concession Stand, a $10.1 million city project constructed in preparation for the 2028 Olympic Games. The project was funded through the City of Long Beach Tidelands Fund, which is restricted to improvements in coastal and tidal areas.

The shooting was reported at about 7:28 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, in the area of 12th Street and Lewis Avenue. Officers found the victim, later identified as Cori Michael Scales, suffering from a gunshot wound. Police said a preliminary investigation indicates Scales was driving when he was shot. His vehicle then crashed into an Edison pole. Officers performed lifesaving measures until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived. Scales was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. He died from his injuries on Aug. 16. The suspect or suspects fled before officers arrived. Police have not released a suspect description. Homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances and motive for the shooting and believe additional witnesses may have seen events before or after the gunfire. Anyone with information is urged to contact Long Beach police.
Coast Guard Rescues Missing Long Beach Man 2.5 Mil Coast Guard Rescues Missing Long Beach Man 2.5 Miles Offshore A 53-year-old Long Beach man who went missing in the Pacific Ocean Sunday evening was found alive Monday morning after a nearly 13-hour search. The Long Beach Fire Department received 911 calls around 10 p.m. Aug. 16 reporting two missing personal watercraft riders. LBFD, the U.S. Coast Guard and Long Beach Police Department launched a search. Around 10:30 p.m., a Good Samaritan reported hearing a woman yelling for help near the Long Beach Breakwater. Lifeguards rescued her, and she was taken to a hospital in stable condition. Both personal watercraft were located around 1:45 a.m., but the man remained missing. At approximately 10:48 a.m. Monday, a Coast Guard helicopter located Paul Anthony Carbullido Jr. approximately 2.5 miles offshore from the Seal Beach Pier. A rescue swimmer pulled him from the water. Carbullido was airlifted to shore and treated for hypothermia. He was reported in stable condition. LBPD had issued a missing-person alert identifying Carbullido as at-risk, but police did not elaborate. The search lasted approximately 12 hours and 48 minutes, from the initial 10 p.m. report until his rescue at 10:48 a.m.

MemorialCare says the hospital is now the only facility in the greater Long Beach area offering 3T MRI technology. The system provides clearer, higher-resolution images that can help doctors identify small changes in nerves, ligaments, blood vessels and other tissues that may be harder to see with traditional MRI. The technology supports specialties including neurology, stroke care, orthopedics, sports medicine, cancer care, heart and vascular care, and select pediatric imaging. Patients may also benefit from faster scan times, less noise and a wider table designed to provide more space during exams. The Hung family has previously supported MemorialCare’s Heart & Vascular Institute, including a gift that helped advance a hybrid cardiovascular operating suite. MemorialCare officials said the new MRI expands access to advanced diagnostic care and gives physicians more detailed information to help diagnose conditions and guide treatment. According to witness information from the scene, three victims were found at two nearby locations. A female victim was reportedly found unconscious but breathing near Pacific Coast Highway and Pine. An adult female was reportedly conscious and breathing after suffering multiple gunshot wounds to her upper body. A third female, located in the 1700 block of Locust Avenue, reportedly suffered a gunshot wound to the lower body and was conscious and breathing. Firefighters treated the victims while officers secured the area and began investigating. No suspect description was available in the initial information. The City of Long Beach is considering a plan to borrow up to $50 million from Wells Fargo to pay for city projects and equipment. The proposal works like a large credit line. The city could borrow money as needed, up to $50 million, and repay it with interest and fees. But there is an important catch: three public properties would be used to secure the financing. They include the Lincoln Parking Garage, the Broadway Parking Garage beneath the Long Beach Public Library, and the Silverado Park swimming pool facility. The properties would be leased to the Finance Authority of Long Beach and then leased back to the city. The city would make payments using money from its General Fund, which also pays for police, fire, parks, libraries and other city services. The city says the financing will provide a public benefit. However, the resolution does not explain exactly how the entire $50 million will be spent, how much interest and fees taxpayers will ultimately pay, or what happens if the city cannot make its payments. That raises questions, especially as Long Beach faces future budget challenges. Vehicles Catch Fire in Parking Garage at Long Beac Vehicles Catch Fire in Parking Garage at Long Beach Apartment Building, Two Cats Rescued Long Beach firefighters quickly contained multiple vehicles on fire at an apartment complex Monday afternoon, preventing flames from spreading into residential units and rescuing two cats from a smoke-filled apartment. The fire was reported at approximately 2:00 p.m. at 6700 Atlantic Ave. When crews arrived, they found several vehicles burning inside the parking garage of a multi-story residential building. Firefighters took an aggressive attack on the fire, successfully stopping the flames from spreading into the apartments above. Although the fire was contained to the vehicles, heavy smoke traveled throughout parts of the building. As firefighters searched the building for possible fire extension and helped residents evacuate, they rescued two cats from a smoke-filled apartment. The pets were later safely reunited with their owner. About 35 firefighters responded to the incident. No injuries to residents or firefighters were reported.
