(by ERIC GRAY, LBLN CONTRIBUTOR) – Mary Sophiea is the co owner of Baja Sonora, a local Mexican eatery which opened its doors in 1998 , almost 19 years ago in Long Beach.  Throughout the years, Baja Sonora has grown as a popular destination, expanding its operations from one location to three.  These locations are in the Los Altos and Bixby Knolls areas of Long Beach, and Los Alamitos in Orange County.

Mary is an active community member, participating in the Rotary Club and helping to raise money for various causes over the years including $50,000 over a three year period for the Long Beach Unified School District and the Long Beach Promise.

When Mary and her business partner Mike Mendelsohn received the news that the retail complex where they were located at on 2940 Clark Avenue in the Los Altos neighborhood was sold and the new owners were planning a complete remodel of the property, they knew they had to do something to keep Baja Sonora on Clark going, and that is just what they did.

Starting mid this week, “Bajasonora on Wheels” food truck will start serving food to customers outside the 2940 Clark Avenue location on the corner of Spring and Clark with a limited menu.

“We are doing what we can, mostly to save our longtime employees.” Mary Sophiea said, “We want our long time employees to stay, we are a family, and we want the quality of food to be the same.”

Baja Sonora will reopen its busiest brick and mortar location on 2940 Clark Avenue when construction is complete in the summertime, barring any potential delays.

“The amazing thing is, we are going to be back and we appreciate all the loyalty and support we’ve had for the past 19 years.”
