Long Beach has recorded six traffic-related deaths in September, involving pedestrians, a bicyclist and a motorcyclist.
On Sept. 4, a 68-year-old Long Beach bicyclist died following a collision with a semi-truck near Pacific Coast Highway and Canal Avenue. Speed is being investigated as a possible factor.
On Sept. 5, an adult pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run on Long Beach Boulevard near 23rd Street. The pedestrian was later struck by a Metro train.
On Sept. 10, a motorcyclist died after colliding with an Acura SUV at Atlantic Avenue and Villa Park. Police said the motorcycle ran a red light, and speed is being investigated.
On Sept. 13, a pedestrian was killed after being struck by multiple vehicles while crossing Pacific Avenue outside a marked crosswalk.
On Sept. 18, a man in a wheelchair was killed while crossing Pacific Coast Highway at East 7th Street in a marked crosswalk. A 23-year-old Irvine man was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter.
On Sept. 21, a female pedestrian was killed after being struck by a Chevrolet Tahoe on Pacific Avenue near 6th Street. Police said the woman was lying in the roadway for unknown reasons. The driver stopped, called 911 and cooperated with investigators.
Police said speed, distracted driving and impaired driving do not appear to be factors in the Sept. 21 collision.
With six traffic deaths in September, it remains unclear whether Long Beach’s new speed cameras will help deter traffic fatalities or whether the city needs more motor patrol officers pulling drivers over and issuing tickets.
